Mitri glared at the mess of cotton in her lap. Mother had sent a pair of double-pointed needles made of ivory that her grandmother had gotten as child. They were quite beautiful, but Mitri could not get the blasted contraptions to work with her! Mitri wasn't quite sure how her mother had afforded the steep price of imported cotton, but had learnt not to look a gift horse in the mouth.

With a huff Mitri threw the failure onto her schoolbag and tightened her threadbare cloak around her. The air was certainly nippy this afternoon. Hearing approaching foot steps, Mitri brightened her expression and turned to greet them.

"Why hello! Do you wish to sit with me? I'm doing nothing of importance at the moment and could use some idle conversation to keep me away from the aggravation that is knitting." Mitri said with a smile.

Miriam had been exploring the around the lake wrapped in her heavy wool cloak when she saw a girl trying to knit. It was clear, even at the distance she was, that it wasn't going well. For starters it looked like her grip on the needles was all wrong.

Cautiously Miriam approached the other girl, she looked familiar but Miriam couldn't remember her name at the moment. She almost turned away when the other girl threw her knitting in her bag, but decided to continue on. After all, she hand't met another knitter yet at Hogwarts, and even if this girl was a beginner, maybe they could be friends?

When the other girl turned and smiled, Miriam stopped uncertainly. "Hi," she replied, "And if you don't mind," she continued as she sat down next to the girl. Remember her manners, she introduced herself, "I'm Miriam, and I'm in Hufflepuff, she said. "... I couldn't help but notice you weren't doing very well with your knitting. I'm decent myself," she continued.

Without waiting for the other girl to answer, Miriam pulled out the scarf she was knitting from some local wool from her hometown from her own bag.

Mitri chuckled at the girl's timidness, Mitri wasn't going to bite Miriam's head off! A Slytherin would be much more suited for such a cruel task. Mitri appreciated the girl's lack of bragging, she was surrounded by enough of big heads daily, that if she never saw one again it'd be too soon.

"That's a lovely scarf, I don't suppose you could show me a few things about knitting? I wouldn't want to be a bother. I'm Mitri by the way! Gryffindor." Mitri said with a chuckle.

Taking out her knitting supplies once more, Mitri attempted to untangle the knots she had created in her previous attempt. Maybe, if the Hufflepuff helped her, she could actually manage to make something. Then again, with Mitri's clumsiness there was no telling.

Miriam blushed at the praise of her scarf. It was simple. a pattern she'd made before, she was hoping to finish it in time to send home to her mother for the holiday's.

"It's nice to meet you, Mitri," Miriam said quietly. "And I don't mind helping. Once you've gotten everything untangled I'll show you how to wind a ball and get started if you'd like," she continued.

She watched at Mitri worked on untangling the snarl she had created. She set up her own knitting in her lap while she waited. The yarn wrapped smoothly around the fingers of her right hand as she worked her way across the row. She couldn't make anything as complicated as her mother could, but she could certainly make nice warm garments for her family. The wool was a little scratchy to begin with, but a good wash, with some strong soap (and possibly a softening charm if it was still scratchy) it would be a great gift for her mother.

Mitri managed to untangle the worst of the knots and restore the material to its former appearance. Miriam's hands appeared graceful to Mitri as she wove her scarf. Maybe by the end of the lesson, Miriam would have showed her how to knit a scarf. Mitri's grandmum would love a scarf for Christmas!

"If you could please! How long have you been knitting? This is my first attempt, obviously, and Mum didn't send any instruction. I guess it's mere luck that you happened to wonder by when I had all but given up!" Mitri said joyfully.

Mitri straightened out her cotton and held the needles- wrong, but she didn't know that- eager to learn. Knitting wouldn't best Mitri! She would conquer this task yet.

Knitting was something Miriam knew, and knew fairly well, and the security in that knowledge gave her a little more confidence.

"First, you need to wind your yarn into a ball," she explained. "It'll keep it from tangling like it will sitting in a pile like that."

Reaching over, she took the end of the yarn from Mitri and began winding it in a figure eight around the thumb and index finger of her left hand. "You start like this," she explained.

"My mother taught me the basics when I was little. I then ended up making socks and scarfs for my siblings, now I just like doing it, but it also helps make warm things for my family," Miriam said as she continued winding.

"Now when you have enough, you take it off your fingers and fold it in half, leaving the end free and begin winding," she said, continuing her explanation while she wound the yarn with her hands. It was gorgeous cotton, the nicest she'd seen in a long time. She fell into the rhythm of winding the ball easily, before her mother had taught her to knit, she'd been in charge of winding the balls.

((OOC: I'm trying to describe winding a center pull ball, they're a real thing, hence the wordiness.))

Adelaine walked to the lake with Deirdre and breathed in the cool, crisp fresh air. She felt as though she hadn't been outside in ages, though it had only been an hour and a half.

"Bugger detention," she complained. "And bugger the Great Hall!"

She stopped and stooped down to pick a small orange flower, one of the last before the first frost killed them all. She hated winter except for the snow. It was brisk, frozen, and uncomfortable; Adele preferred warm summer days lounging in the grass.

"Say, is that Mitri?" she pointed over to the giant tree next to the lake where her friend sat with a small Hufflepuff girl. "Hello, you two!"

Adele skipped over and plopped down next to them.

Deirdre twirled around a bit, the skirts of her dress twisting around her legs. It felt like they had been in the Great Hall for the entire day, even if it was only an hour or so.

"It was a bit of a nuisance, wasn't it? I don't think either of us deserved it, to be honest." she sighed.

She looked over to where Adele's gaze was and saw Mitri with her housemate, Miriam. Deirdre hadn't spoken to her much, but she knew the girl was kind.

"Nice to see you both today." She said.

She knelt in the grass beside Adele and played with a bit of moss on a rock.

Miriam jerked in surprise when Adelaine plopped down beside her and Mitri. So much so she dropped the yarn ball she was almost finished winding for Mitri.

"Nice to see you too," she replied as she went back to winding the ball. Mitri had done a good job of untangling it. She hadn't come across any knots or snarls in the yarn while she was winding.

Finishing, she tucked in the outside end to keep it secure and gave a tug on the tail that was hanging out of the inside of the ball. It came loose from the center and began to pull smoothly.

"Here, Mitri," Miriam said handing back the yarn. She looked down again as there were more people around, "If you want me to show you how to cast on, I can," she offered.

Adelaine looked on and realized the pair were knitting. She immediately began looking around for something else to do. At home, Adele was to practice at her needlework once a day; all highborn ladies were to do so. It brought back memories of long, silent hours alone in her chambers.

"Hmm..."

Finally, an idea came to mind Not wishing to be rude, she pulled Deirdre aside and stepped to the bank of the lake.

"Have you ever wanted to walk on water?" she asked, a grin spreading across her face.

Adele threw off her cloak and knelt down on the cold ground; luckily, she had worn her woolen breeches today, originally planning on a trip to the lake before the food fight happened. She wouldn't have to worry about dirtying her skirts, anyhow.

"Now, let's see." She pulled out her wand and lightly touched it to the surface of the lake. "Glacius."

Inch by inch, a foot of the water froze, about three inches thick.

Deirdre let Adele pull her over to the lake's edge. The water seemed to expand for a hundred miles and was very dark once you left the shallows.

"I see why they call this the Black Lake." She muttered. "I have never really thought of it before. But it does sound like fun!"

Deirdre watched in awe as the water began to freeze. They hadn't learned that spell yet so Adele must have been taught it at home.

"Blimey, Adele! That's amazing!" She exclaimed.

Adelaine smiled ear to ear as she cast the spell again and the ice spread further. She and her father, on days when he would actually let her be a child, would make ice on the surface of their pond and skate in the middle of the summer. Those were the fondest memories she had of her life back home.

"Do you want me to teach you how to do it?" She went a couple feet to the right, where the ice hadn't reached yet, and sat down. "It's really quite easy. All you have to do is concentrate, imagine ice and will it to freeze the water. Glacius."

The ice had now spread ten feet out, and ran five feet wide. Adele stepped onto the surface gingerly and it held up. "Come on!"

Mitri looked in awe as Adele began to walk on water, or rather ice. Looking at the fun Adele and Deirdre were having, Mitri decided to leave the knitting for another day, surely Miriam would understand? Mitri placed her supplies away, careful to keep the yarn as Miriam had handed it to her.

Standing, Mitri told Miriam, "I do hope you understand, I'd rather join in their festivities than knit at the moment. Could we do it another day? Come on! Let's catch up with the girls!"

With a smile, Mitri bounded her way to the others.

"Mind if I join in? Glacius" Mitri cast the spell, following by Adele's instructions and example.

Determining the ice to be sturdy enough after putting her toe on it, Mitri hopped onto the ice and begun to freeze more and more of the Lake. It was jolly good fun!

Miriam smiled in understanding. "It's not a problem," she said as Mitri went off to join the others. She knew that not everyone was as enthusiastic as she was about knitting.

Miriam took a bit more time getting up. It did look fun but she was nervous about the ice breaking. After a couple of moments of hesitation, Miriam went to the edge of the lake herself.

Taking a bit more time she though over Adelaine's instructions before leaning down and touching the tip of her wand to the ice. "Glacius," she said while imagining the water freezing.

To her happiness ice slowly spread out from where the tip of her wand. She repeated the phrase a few more times until she had about three feet of thick ice in front of her. She tested it with her foot before standing on it. Slowly, freezing more of the lake, she joined her piece of ice with the others and moved to join them farther out.

Adelaine grinned with pride as she observed their progress. The patch of ice now ran a mile long and half as much wide. Perhaps she should follow in Renoir's footsteps and become Professor Beaumont, Ravenclaw Head of House.

"I hope the idea of this doesn't frighten any of you, but..." She ran and slid till she came to the very edge of the ice and exclaimed, "Do you realize we are literally in the middle of the lake?!"

She laid flat on her stomach and laughed gleefully, sliding her fingertips across the surface of the dark, murky water. Somewhere below her, there was a giant squid lurking.

Miriam smiled nervously. She hadn't strayed quite as far as the other's from shore. She trusted the ice, but at the same time if something happened they were all wearing too many clothes to make it out without help.

"It does bother me a little," Miriam admitted just loudly enough for the others to hear.

"Have you seen the squid?" She managed to ask before she slipped and fell. Managing to get back to her feet she saw her wand a ways a way and slowly slid her way towards it. It would be good if she didn't loose it in the lake, she wasn't sure how water would affect it.

Deirdre hadn't managed the spell at first but she eventually got her portion of ice as far as the rest of the girls'. She kept her movement slow and even as she walked so she wouldn't slip.

"It is sort of frightenin', te be honest. But we should be fine." Deirdre said.

She reached down to help out her housemate stand back up. The ice wasn't the best thing they could be standing on, especially near the edge.

"Are ye alrigh', Miriam?" she asked.

Miriam smiled at Deirdre as she grabbed her wand and let the other girl help her up. "I'm fine, thank you," she said.

Taking a moment to steady herself, she checked over her wand to make sure it wasn't damaged, thankfully it hadn't been hurt by the fall.

"I don't think I'll be getting much closer to the edge though," she said eyeing the edge of the ice.
