Professor Aitken glanced up from her work to see her first year students begin to make their way into her classroom. She noted, with some humor, that they all seemed to be rather skittish. She nodded in acknowledgement to those who greeted her and directed them towards the board for instruction. The directions on the board simply told them to wisely choose a seat for the time being and, only if she felt it were required, would she change the seating arrangement as she saw fit.

Grading the papers of her older students, a summer assignment that they had to have finished at the start of term, she waited for her new class to file in. A quiet chatter filled the room as she marked an essay with a bold T. John had the smarts, but none of the drive. The disappointing paper reminded Professor Aitken of her recent dispute with her colleague, Professor Renoir. Renoir never failed to get under her skin. Aitken, refused however to give the witch her time of day for the most part. No doubt she was intelligent, but intelligence only gets one so far.

Shaking off her thoughts, Professor Aitken continued her grading with an annoyed sigh. Hopefully this group of first years would prove better than her last few. She wasn’t one for children, but teaching was calming, that is when she wasn’t dealing with spilled cauldrons or a specific colleague of hers. However dark her mood, Aitken kept her face impassive as she watched her students enter, this year would go swimmingly, even if she had to make it go so herself. How much damage could these first years do anyways? They were only going to make a Cure for Boils.

Adelaine wandered into the cold classroom with a few of her new housemates. Professor Aitken was the teacher of Potions, and she hoped the woman didn't take out whatever grudge she held with Renoir on her students. Blast that wretched hat, she thought with a sigh. Though truth be told, she'd rather be on Renoir's side than Aitken's. Something about the way the Ravenclaw Head of House went about things was reassuring. Renoir knew what she was doing.

"Shall we sit here, Adele?"

Her friends had all sat at one table. Adelaine glanced around the room curiously and spotted a student sitting all alone in the corner. Perhaps there was something wrong, or maybe they simply hadn't met anyone yet. Whatever it was, she was going to find out.

"I'll join you at lunch," she smiled and started toward the corner of the room. "Don't mind if I sit here, do you?"

Without waiting for a response, Adele set her patched up satchel on the ground and turned to the student.

"My name is Adele," she said pleasantly, deciding not to give a last name. Her father always taught her to get to know a person before you judge them. Of course, he only meant this toward those of a lower class; higher classes must know who you are and what it means, he always said. Therefore, Adelaine had grown up giving her last name to some and not others. "Who might you be?"

Potions sounded exactly like something a witch would brew. Hence why it was taught at Hogwarts. Mitri knew if any of her Muggle friends heard of her brewing a potion, they'd surely call together a mob to execute her. Mitri didn't blame them though, they were simply ignorant of the magical world and she had been too until receiving her letter from Hogwarts.

Potions was going to be a new experience for sure, it wasn't as if she were making porridge. Mitri arrived early to the Potions classroom, greeted the Professor, and took a seat in the corner. It had an optimal view of the board and teacher. People filed in, sat with their peers as Mitri sighed. She didn't see any of her Gryffindor friends.

Luckily, a Ravenclaw, sat next to her so Mitri was no longer alone. The girl was rather pretty in Mitri's opinion and her manner seemed polite.

"Hello Adele, I'm Mitri." Mitri blushed, tapping her quill on the counter.

The potions classroom wasn't half as awful smelling as the Apothecary, but that wasn't saying much. Arya glanced curiously around the crowded room. Jars, bottles, vials, and containers of all sorts filled shelf after shelf, holding slimy, squirmy things that she didn't even want to know existed.

"Afternoon, Professor," she nodded curtly, looking for an empty seat.

She spied two of her friends, Adele and Mitri (did they know each other?) but there were no open spots around them. Blast it all, she thought irritably. Knowing her luck, she'd probably end up next to some snobby, muggle-hating, teacher's pet...so Nadia, basically.

Reading the board only darkened her mood more. She was going to be stuck with whatever eejit she sat next to today? Fantastic. Potions was already turning out to be her most dreaded subject. With a borderline dramatic sigh, Arya dropped into an empty seat in the far back corner of the room, setting her things on the table in front of her. Tapping her fingers on the side of the chair, she waited to see what student would have the joy of sitting beside her.

Morgana walked sheepishly into the potions classroom and quietlysat at one at the tables at teh back of the classroom. looking around the crowded room she could see shelves layden with alsorts of different Jars, bottles, vials, and containers full of things she didnt even want to guess what they held.

she colud see quite afew people dotted about the classroom, but for her own comfort she would prefer to sit alone for the time being. she set her shabby, worn satchel onto the desk infront of her. she looked at the blackboard and sighed at the sight of all the different instructions. this was going to be no easy task she thought but as always she would try her best.

Nadia patted down her blonde hair and smoothed out her robes. It wouldn't be wise to look rumpled when meeting her Potions professor. Checking to see everything was in order, Nadia strolled into the class with her head held high.

Seeing as the Professor was hard at work, Nadia decided to give her the gift after class. Taking a quick survey of the classroom she saw few familiar faces. With a shiver of disgust she noted that "Adele" was in her class. Nadia threw a sneer in Adele's direction and sat next to a Hufflepuff.

Though it wasn't in her interest to befriend a Hufflepuff, this one looked to at least be a half-blood. By that, Nadia meant she wasn't staring like a baboon in all directions like the girl Adele sat next to. The girl was surely a mudblood.

"Hello, I'm Nadia, mind if I sit here?" she asked the Hufflepuff, dumping her bags on the floor and taking the seat.

Morgana, who had been staring into space was suddenly startled. by the blonde haired girl, she wants to sit with me? Morgana thought to herself.
she smiled slightly and nodded. "yes of course" she said, trying to sound polite.

great she thought, not only do i have to be crowded, now i have to sit next to a slytherin. but she would try to be be polite she added to her thoughts.

the girl introduced herself as Nadia and dumped her bags as she sat down. "hello im Morgana" she said nervously but smiling sweetly at the girl as she shuffled down to give the girl more room.

Marigold was breathing heavily when she came into the potions class. Luckily,she wasn't late but it took her some time to find the classroom. It also didn't help that the staircases changed direction every time she happened to have to go down one. She sighed happily as she realized that she had time to spare.

She read the board as she took a seat at an empty desk. The students had to be in pairs. She sighed annoyingly. She's always very friendly with her fellow students and doesn't mind working with them......as long as it's not a school assignment. She preferred the work alone when it came to her schoolwork. But,she had to follow directions. She looked around the room.

Adele and some Gryffindor girl was sitting together. I believe her name is Mitri.she recalled to herself. Nadia was sitting next to a Hufflepuff girl. Is that Morgana?Marigold thought to herself. So,that left Arya. Marigold gathered her bag and cauldron.

"Hi,Arya. Mind if I sit here?"she asked cheerfully,already sitting down. She set her cauldron down on the table and put her bag next to her chair,taking out her quill,ink bottle,and textbook. She was always prepared for class. She looked at the board.

"A Cure for Boils. Sounds interesting,doesn't it Arya?"she asked her potions partner.

Arya would be lying if she said she wasn't pleased that Marigold sat next to her. The girl was rather friendly, and a far better desk partner than Nadia Murray would be. The Slytherin had plopped down next to the quiet Hufflepuff girl; a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff? Wonders never ceased.

"Well, if you're going to sit there anyway," she muttered as Marigold sat without waiting for a response.

Glancing back to Adele and Mitri, Arya almost chuckled. Did Gryffindors always befriend Ravenclaws? At least she'd have someone next to her to make sure she was doing the potion correctly. No, that would be wrong of me to assume she'll know what she's doing, Arya thought. But still..

"A Cure for Boils? Sounds bloody disgusting, if you ask me," she responded sarcastically. "Do you reckon it'll be easy?"

"Well,it might take a few tries but it looks fairly simple."Marigold replied,looking at the directions in the textbook."But,I'm sure Professor Aitken will help us if we need it."

Marigold looked around the classroom. There were many weird pairs. A Slytherin and a Hufflepuff. A Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw. Well,then again,Arya and I are quite a weird pair as well.she thought to herself.

"Let's see what we'll need.Four horned slugs,six snake fangs,and two porcupine quills."Marigold said quietly,looking at the vials that contained the ingredients. The snake fangs and porcupine quills wouldn't bother her to much. It's the horned slugs that would. They're slimy,stinky,and......well,alive.

"Those poor horned slugs."Marigold muttered.

(OOC: I used the potion from Pottermore since it tells us what it is. Is that alright? If not,I can edit it.)

Morgana pulled out her book and flicked through the pages, looking for the page she needed to find out the ingredients, shaking Her head hearing people whispering. how could they whisper? this was their first potions lesson, wernt they even a little worried? she thought as sh pulled at a loose curl of hair.

she reached the page for a cure for boils and began reading what ingredients she would need and checking out the steps of the potion, she noticed she would need her wand at one part of the spell so she pulled it out and gazed at the cresent moons that were covering the length of her wand. worried anyone would glance and notice her, she quickly placed her wand on the table.

Professor Aitken raised an eyebrow as she took inventory of her class. There were several odd pairings, including a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff. She would have to remind the Slytherin girl to keep up appearances, for anything she did reflected on Professor Aitken as her Head of House. To cease the chatter, Professor Aitken loudly cleared her throat.

"I assume none of you have read your textbook, but I shall grant you all a chance. What is the first ingredient used in brewing A Cure for Boils, and how much of it do you use? While you all ponder this, open your textbooks to page thirty-four, and you would do well not to speak nor touch anything while fulfilling the mindless task, unless of course you have an answer to my question." the Professor sighed in annoyance.

How many students would mess up the simple potion she did not know, but she wasn't looking forward to visiting the infirmary with a student at the moment. With a wave of her wand, Professor Aitken started her own cauldron and waited for an answer to her question.

Adelaine blushed deeply as she looked around the room. Aitken just assumed that no one had read ahead..but she had. Adelaine had read all of her schoolbooks within two weeks before school began. Sinking a bit lower in her chair, she raised her hand slowly.

"Snake fangs," she said quietly before clearing her throat. "You crush six snake fangs and add four measures.."

As she expected, a few snickers echoed across the silent classroom. Certainly none from Ravenclaw, but she suspected a certain Slytherin may have joined in the chorus. She flipped through her book until she found page 34 and ignored the smirks she got. Adele didn't mind at all really; she wasn't ashamed of her thirst for knowledge, and she never had been. Perhaps she was meant for the blue and bronze after all..

Kolby snickered at the Ravenclaw. Of course she would know. Kolby put his head back down on the desk. He had come in late and didn't have a pair at the moment. He didn't care. He just wanted a mid afternoon nap.

"This school is disgusting."he muttered under his breath. Would the professor really get on to him? He was in her house after all and he was royalty. He could get her fired. He sighed and began to sleep,looking at the wall.

Aitken was already tired of the insolence of her first-years. It was no surprise when a Ravenclaw answered her question, but the gall of one of her own Housemembers appalled her. She was not oblivious to the boy's heritage, but wouldn't be taken for a fool in her own classroom.

"Correct, Miss Beaumont, is it? Five points to Ravenclaw. You there, Mr, Parry, if you do not straighten up and behave, I can assure this year will not be pleasant for you. Now class, as Miss Beaumont said we are going to start with snake fangs. I am going to write the recipe on the board, and at least one from a pair needs to collect the supplies. Do not touch anything but what is needed, Another copy of the recipe is in your textbook. While your partner is gathering the ingredients, pull out your cauldrons and light them." Aitken said in annoyance.

With a flick of her wand the instructions appeared on the board:

1. Add 6 snake fangs to the mortar.
2. Crush into a fine powder using the pestle.
3. Add 4 measures of the crushed fangs to your cauldron.
4. Heat the mixture to 250 for 10 seconds.
5. Wave your wand.
6. Leave to brew and return in 45 minutes.
7. Add 4 horned slugs to your cauldron.
8. Take the cauldron off the fire before adding the next ingredient.
9. Add 2 porcupine quills to your cauldron.
10. Stir 5 times, clockwise.
11. Wave your wand to complete the potion.


"When you are done, please call me over and I will demonstrate the proper way to store your potions. If anyone needs further instruction, again, just call my attention and I shall advise you."

Marigold looked back at the Slytherin boy and scoffed. Slacker.she thought to herself. She strongly disliked slackers.

"Shall we get started Arya?I'll crush the snake fangs if you preheat the cauldron to 250."Marigold asked her partner,reading the instructions from the book. She then went to the cabinet and gathered all the necessary ingredients for her and Arya. She also grabbed a mortar and pestle. She then returned to her seat and measured out six snake fangs into the mortar. They smelled horrible. She wrinkled her nose in disgust.

"This smells dreadful. Like rotten meat and poison."she commented to Arya,covering her nose.

Mitri admired Adele's intelligence with a twinge of envy. She had never been one to excel at her studies. Of course though, since Adele was a Ravenclaw, she'd have to be intelligent. The potion seemed simple enough in theory, but due to Mitri's history of clumsiness she was afraid she might mess it up.

"Do you want me to get the ingredients while you start the cauldron? Or would you rather we switch it? Actually, let me go get the ingredients. I'd probably melt the cauldron." Mitri told Adele.

Mitri went to the stores and carefully gathered the ingredients. Once at the table she began to crush the six fangs into the mortar.

"It's not exactly the scent of roses is it?" Mitri jested.

"A pleasure," Nadia said with light sarcasm to Morgana. Nadia wouldn't generally associate herself with Hufflepuffs, but the other students were far more likely to get on Nadia's nerves. Gryffindors with their bleeding hearts, Ravenclaws with their snottiness, and even her own house with its alternate plans. Hufflepuffs were to timid to go against Nadia.

"You go collect the ingredients while I start the fire." Nadia ordered Morgana with a flick of her wrist. Turning her attention to her cauldron, Nadia quickly lit it and sighed in boredom. If it weren't for her Head of House teaching this class, Nadia surely would have been asleep. Who cared about potions when you could attack someone with jinxes or such. This class was a waste of time if you asked her.

Arya glared at the Slytherin boy who now had his head on the desk. What was he playing at? Did he really think that kind of behavior would be allowed? She wasn't the biggest fan of Professor Aitken, but surely that snake wouldn't be tolerated. Luckily, the teacher jumped on him immediately.

"Can you believe the nerve of some people?" she muttered quietly to Marigold, who seemed to be having trouble getting started on crushing the fangs. "I'll take care of that, just keep the cauldron heated once I add these."

She wasn't sure where this sudden burst of confidence had come from; Arya figured she would dread potions. But as she crushed the snake fangs into a fine powder, she realized the class wasn't so bad after all.

"Alright, ready?" she asked, dumping four measures of powder into the cauldron.

"Thanks. I can't stand the smell. But,I suppose I'll get used to it eventually."Marigold told Arya when she finished crushing the fangs. Marigold kept the fire under the cauldron going,keeping it at a small flame and at an even 250 degrees.

She took her wand out and looked at the instructions in the book. Wave your wand? No specific movement or anything? How confusing.she thought to herself. She shrugged and watched as Arya poured the fangs into the mixture. Then,she counted aloud.

"1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10."she said. Marigold then waved her wand over the cauldron. A small patch of green smoke rose up to the ceiling.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"she asked Arya after not finding anything about smoke rising after mixing in the fangs in the book.

"Well,hopefully we did it right. Now all we have to do wait. It's a Pewter cauldron so unfortunately,we have to wait 45 minutes. But,that'll give us time to get to know each other."Marigold said,taking out a quill and a piece of parchment. She felt like writing a letter to mother.

Kolby looked at his partner. A Hufflepuff girl. She didn't even realize that she had sit by him. He sighed in annoyance. I guess I'm stuck with her. he thought to himself.

"I'm Kolby, squire to my uncle King Carlisle. Frankly, I do not care to know your name, but since we are partners, I would like it very much if you did most of the ingredients mixing. I have a very weak stomach and the disgusting things that this potion requires is sure to make be regurgitate whatever I had for lunch. So, I will keep the cauldron going. You can do the rest." he lied to his partner in a condensing and arrogant manner. He smiled to himself and began stoking the fire.

Deirdre's eyes narrowed. What a nuisance! If he weren't royalty, and if she hadn't been taught that she had to respect that title, she would give him a good beating. But since she couldn't do that, she'd have to think of something else.

"I'll have you know that I am Lady Deirdre McCalahan of Erdini and I will not be spoken to in such a rude tone! I'll do it, anyway, because I know you won't."

She gathered all the acquired ingredients. Just as she was about to go back, she snatched a vial of dragon's blood. She figured not much could happen if she did it wrong on purpose. Except maybe detention. But it would be worth it if he got it, too.

When she got back, she followed the instructions as best she could, which wasn't very good in and of itself, then she added three drops of the dragons blood when she thought no one was looking. She pretended to be scared as the cauldron began to shake.

"Oh, Squire," she said, "I think I may have done something wrong. Could you take a look, please? After all, you are a Pureblood, you would at least know how these work."

I hope he's enough of an idiot to fall for it.

Morgana nodded to the slytherin girl and shuffled off to collect the ingredients. although she did not like being bossed about, she was not about to argue with the girl and collected the ingredients and returned to her desk. "here you go" she said nervously, placing the ingredients on the table.

Adele chuckled to herself as Mitri made her way to the storage. For a brave and courageous Gryffindor, she certainly wasn't the most coordinated. And she was right; she probably would melt the cauldron.

"Potions has to be my least favorite subject," she muttered to Mitri when she sat back down.

She carefully lit the cauldron as Mitri added the ingredients. The smell was wretched; what could possibly sway someone, especially a lady like Professor Aitken, to dedicate their life to such a rancid area of expertise?

"Merlin's beard, look at that!" she whisper-shouted, nodding discretely over to Arya and Marigold's smoking cauldron. "Is that supposed to happen?"

Morgana was proving to be a waste of space. The girl was so timid it almost hurt. Would it kill for a Hufflepuff to actually own a spine? Nadia dismissed the girl and set upon making the potion herself. If Nadia actually let the girl touch something the girl would likely snap in two.

"I don't think you can mess this up, so crush these fangs."

Nadia got to work on the next ingredient to be prepared. With careful and steady hands Nadia finished the task easily enough.

"I am not getting younger. By the looks of it, neither are you. Are you sure you're a first-year? No need to be so slow, just get it done with!"
Nadia said to Morgana.
