Marguerite Renoir straightened her blue and bronze tunic, fixed her long (and slightly messy; fashionably messy) braid for the hundredth time. She told herself it was because one must always look presentable for one’s students, but she couldn’t kid herself. Charles would be handling the broom chest once again, and one must always look presentable for one’s future husband gamekeeper.

Fair morning, Charles?” she asked wistfully.

Fair as any,” the gamekeeper responded in kind, a smile on his face.

She stood, yet again, in the middle of the Pitch awaiting her students. The last class had ended abruptly when a Gryffindor lad had fainted, so they were already a lesson behind. Renoir had a mind to make these students expert flyers; the Quidditch Teams had dwindled in talent the last few years.

Arya was the first one in the girls changing room that morning. She threw on her gold and maroon tunic, wide black belt, and black breeches and ran outside to the pitch. Ready to show up the rest of the class, she went over the techniques she'd practiced with Harcourt.

"Woollongong Shimmy," she muttered under her breath. "Sloth Grip Roll..Wronski Feint.."

The Wronski Feint was her favorite. It was quite dangerous too, and not many Seekers attempted it. Arry had gone to the library the morning after her practice session to look it up. Oddly enough, she had seen Adele and Nadia there...together. Whispering and muttering secretively.

"Good morning, Professor," she smiled excitedly. "Good morning, Stone."

((OOC: About the Quidditch techniques -- doesn't matter when they were actually invented, it's too late to go back on them now that we've already had a whole thread with them.))

Kolby hastily pulled on his uniform of green and silver and then ran out on to the Quidditch Pitch. Kolby was an adrenaline junkie. Which was one of the reasons he played pranks. It gave him a rush. So, he was always excited about flying.

"Good morning Professor Renoir. Lovely morning, isn't it?"he asked the professor. He was happy for once. He noticed that Arya was very excited. Is she the one that got a lesson from Harcourt?he thought to himself. He shrugged and grabbed a broom.

Marigold walked onto the Quidditch Pitch in her blue and bronze uniform. She was a bit nervous to try flying. She wasn't scared of heights. She had climbed plenty of trees to get apples, pears, honey, and other food. But, she was scared of embarrassing herself. Especially with all the Slytherins and that her head of house was the teacher. And that most people already know more than she does.

"Good morning Professor."she said, grabbing a broom. She smiled and went over to Arya.

"Are you nervous Arya?"she asked.

"She doesn't look nervous, does she?" Adele joked as she walked up behind her two friends.

Marigold and Arya stood waiting for the rest of the class to arrive, and Adelaine joined them happily. Hopefully this lesson wouldn't end abruptly and they would actually get to fly. She was curious though as to why Arry didn't seem quite as scared as she was the other day.

"Marigold, are you nervous?" she asked with a smile. Then more quietly said, "Have either of you flown before? I have, with my father."

It was against wizard law to fly before your first lesson at school, but every wizarding family in the land teaches their children to fly. It felt safer, probably, knowing that if your kids were hurt you'd at least be there for them.

Beatrix ran into class late. feeling worried that she would be docked house points for arriving late and to top it off she was new. She grabbed a broom and stood next to it. She knew it was obvious she was late but she figured if she smiled big and then bowed her head. She hoped it would keep her out of trouble.

Deirdre ran as quickly as she could onto the Quidditch Pitch. She was very nervous about this lesson. Being muggleborn, she had never flown before and didn't think it would end well for her. She picked up a broom and stood by Marigold and the other girls. Deirdre moved the broom to rest in the crook of her elbow as she fidgeted with her hair again.

I don't think I can do this. What if I fall off and the others laugh at me? Or I might break something and have to go to the hospital wing. The professor might get angry if she has to end the lesson again.

She kept braiding her hair, waiting for the inevitable.

"No. I haven't flown before. I'm a bit scared."Marigold admitted to her friends. She blushed as most of them have. Deirdre coming from nobility. Adele being an aristocrat and news got around that someone saw Arya taking a lesson from Professor Harcourt. So, probably, all of her friend have flown at least once. Except Marigold.

Being a servant girl, her family wasn't allowed to ride a broom, for the fear of running away from Mr. de Hattes. It was the law. So, she never flown. She's seen Mr. de Hattes children fly and it looked simple enough. Marigold was still bright red. She was a bit embarrassed.

"Oh well. I'll try my best. You guys won't laugh, will you?"she asked, hoping that they won't. She really couldn't take another hit to her self esteem.

Deirdre tied off the braid with a blue ribbon to make sure her hair didn't get in her eyes if she made it into the air.

She smiled at Marigold. "I have no reason to laugh at anyone. I've never flown before, either, being muggleborn. There was no one to teach me. Just make sure to mourn me when I fall off my broom, will you? For I have no doubt it is certain."

She pretended to faint, her hands pressed against her chest, tipping herself a little before standing straight again.

((Sorry it's so short.))

"I would probably laugh.." she responded with mocking innocence as Marigold worried. "But you must forgive me, it's only my nature."

Arya listened to her friends talk about flying for the first time and how nervous they were. She bit her lip and thought; should she tell them? What would they do? They were the truest friends Arry had ever had, yet she had really only known them for a few weeks....

"Deirdre, you know you weren't supposed to take a broom yet.." But it didn't look as though the professor would have even noticed. Renoir was busy flirting away with Charles Stone.

Arry took a deep breath. Her friends wouldn't care, there had already been rumors about it anyway. She lowered her voice and fired away.

"I took a lesson with Professor Harcourt the other night...Well, it wasn't supposed to be a lesson. I had just gone to the pitch by myself to get it over with, when he showed up.."

Then her excitement got the better of her and grinned. "He says I'm really good, he's going to recommend me for the Gryffindor Quidditch team!"

Professor Renoir responded in kind to the students who greeted her. They were suck ups, every one. If they thought that politely wishing her a fair day every lesson would move them along they were wrong. But she was in too good a mood to care. The sky was clear, the breeze was cool, and Charles was here. It was the perfect day for flying.

"All right, students, gather round," she started, raising her voice. "Those of you who have taken liberty to grab a broom, you've just lost two house points."

Groans and moans went up throughout the line of children as they twiddled the broomsticks between their fingers. Marguerite hated it when students just assumed.

"The rest of you, take a broom now." When all the students were done and back in a line, she spoke again to her eager class. "Now, we are actually going to fly today. I want you to lay your brooms on the ground next to you and say 'up'. When you have done it correctly, mount and kick off lightly. Do not go anywhere."

She did it with her broom for an example and hovered a few feet above the ground, watching as her students attempted it. This was her favorite part.

Marigold laughed at Deirdre's joke and breathed a sigh of relief. So she wasn't the only one. Thank god.

"That's great Arya! Do you think he could give me a lesson too?"Marigold said when Arya told them about her lesson with Harcourt. She was really happy for her friend and she hoped to see Arya do really well as a Quidditch player.

Marigold groaned and put her broom beside her. Minus two points for Ravenclaw.she thought in her head. Not that big a deal. They were ahead by a lot.

"Up."she told the broom. Nothing. She sighed. "Up."she tried again. It rolled around. Close. Very close. After a few more tires and it just rolling around, she got angry. "Up!" The broom shot up to Marigold's hand. She firmly grasped it. Now for the tricky part.she thought, mounting the broom. She closed her eyes and kicked off. She hovered a few feet above the air. She looked around for her friends and smiled.

This is pretty easy.she thought, holding on the broom tightly so she won't fall off. She didn't want to embarrass herself.

Arya grabbed a broom from the chest and got back in line. This was the part she had been waiting for. She wasn't sure how much longer she could contain her excitement; they were finally going to fly! All nervousness that she may have had during the last lesson had disappeared, and she set her broom down next to her.

"Okay...up," she commanded.

The broom immediately shot upward and fit comfortably in her palm. Arry didn't dare look up and see whether or not Professor Renoir was suspicious. Instead, she felt the broom tingle just slightly and let go of it. It was hovering in the air, as it had done with Harcourt the other night. She threw her leg over it and kicked off, staying just a few feet above the ground.

"Brilliant," she breathed, ecstatic to be in the air again.

Adele shrugged at Marigold when Renoir announced they would be deducted two points. Ravenclaw was well ahead anyway. She grinned at Arya when she confessed to taking a lesson from Harcourt; Adelaine had been out of practice for a long time. Her father hadn’t let her touch a broom since she their last lesson a year ago.

Here goes nothing,” she muttered, setting her broom to the ground next to her. She noticed that it took Marigold a few times; hopefully it would work for her as quickly as Arya’s broom had. “Up!….up?” It was like the broom wasn’t certain it wanted to rise, it simply wiggled around on the ground. “Come on!” It flew into the air and Adele had to snatch it before it went any higher.

Thank you very much,” she said curtly to the old broom, throwing a leg over and kicking up a few feet into the air.

"Well done, Arry!" Rose exclaimed when Arya's broom shot up into the air and she kicked off. She seems like a natural.

Rose's parents had only let her fly once, and it wasn't really even her doing the hard part. She had ridden on the back of her father's broom on their way to Diagon Alley. That was two years ago; her family mostly transported by way of the Floo Network. She laid her broom on the ground and put her hand out over it.

"Alright. Up!" she said sternly, and the broom rolled around for a moment, but it rose up quite fast.

Well, that's a shocker. Never thought that would happen! she mounted her broom and kicked off the ground.

Miriam watched her classmates go before she stepped up next to her broom. She'd never been on one before. Her family didn't own a flying broom. It was too dangerous in the city where the lived, with muggles everywhere.

Holding her hand out over the broom, she said, "Up!" To her great surprise the broom immediately leapt into her hand. Cautiously she sat astride on the broom. The only time she'd ridden something was horse, and then it was sidesaddle because she was wearing skirts. Pants were a novelty for her, and she felt a little self conscious wearing them.

She kicked off and managed to hover, "Whoa!" she exclaimed as she hovered there before dropping back to the ground and stumbling on the landing.

Shakily getting off the broom Miriam was surprised she'd managed to actually succeed in getting off the ground.

Deirdre grumbled a little when she heard Renior say she had cost Hufflepuff a few points. She placed her broomstick on the ground beside her. She held her hand over it and breathed deeply.

"Up!" The broom rolled a little to the left. The girl sighed. At least it was a sign of improvement. "Up!" It rose about four inches from the ground and she snatched it from the air.

Deirdre straddled the broom and kicked off the ground. Her broom shot up too fast and she lost her grip. She fell a couple feet and landed on her rear.

"Ow." she groaned, getting to her feet. "I'm fine."

Mitri looked cautiously at the broom. With her tendency to be a clutz, she only hoped she didn't hurt anyone. With no bacon around though she couldn't cause too much havoc, right? Setting the broom beside her, she held out her hand.

"Up!" Mitri said with surprising force. The broom seemed to think about the command for a moment before slowly shooting into Mitri's hand. Maybe this whole flying thing wouldn't be so bad after all.

Mitri awkwardly boarded the broom and kicked off. She floated a few feet off the ground, laughing in glee.

"I'm actually doing it!"
she muttered grinning.

Nadia didn't give her classmates a second glance as she looked down at the broom with frustration. He father had made her try flying many times, and she had failed to impress him each time. Her flying was not the best, but she could certainly get her broom off of the ground.

"Up." Nadia said rudely. The broom rose, hitting her slightly on the ankle causing her to silently curse. Mounting the broom, she quickly kicked off with only the slightest of unbalance.

Hearing a muggleborn being unnecessarily joyful, Nadia couldn't help but scoff at the naivety of her classmates. Their ignorance was certainly not bliss for Nadia, rather annoying if you asked her.

Marguerite simply couldn’t fathom how a parent could allow their children to turn out so..so….smug. She knew that several of the highborn had probably learned to fly long ago, but it wasn’t completely evident. Adelaine’s broom seemed content to roll around for a bit, and Nadia’s (probably purposely) hit her ankle on the way up. What she wasn’t expecting was the muggleborn Gryffindor, Arya, to be so good…Were the rumors true? She’d have to have a word with Harcourt.

Nicely done, all of you,” she commented when every student was hovering about three feet above ground. “Now, the basics: lean slightly to the left or right to go each direction; slightly forward to move forward, more than slightly to go down.

She took a breath; she hated talking so much when there was flying to be done.

Tip the handle slightly up to go up, and…Well you get the gist of it. Now do what I do.

She rose fifteen feet and did a full lap around the Pitch, coming to a halt in the middle to supervise as her students did the same. Charles was on the ground, ready if anyone fell.

"One thing you should all know about brooms -- they have a mind of their own. You can will them to speed up, or just grip the handle tighter."

Adele laughed loudly when Deirdre fell on her butt. It’s a good thing she was only three feet up, she thought, shuddering to think what would happen if someone fell when they were higher. She hoped she wouldn’t find out. Before she knew it, Renoir was ordering them to fly.

Is this safe for beginners?” she whispered to no one in particular.

The only person in her group of friends who would have flown before was Marigold, but she looked as though she had never touched a broom. Adelaine kicked up a bit harder and rose to Renoir’s height. Kids were already starting to make their way shakily around the pitch.

Deirdre, do try to maintain balance this time,” she shouted over to the Hufflepuff anxiously.

Without another word, Adele leaned forward slightly, gripped the handle tighter, and zoomed around the Pitch. It was a wonderful feeling, soaring like a bird with the wind blowing through her hair. Then she heard a shout behind her, which brought her back to reality and she yanked the handle up to come to a stop.

Deirdre got back on the broom and rose slowly up to Renior's level. It wasn't too difficult. She just needed to be a bit more careful.

"I think I have it this time, Adele." She shouted back. "I just need to get better control, is all."

The Irish girl leaned forward a little, cautiously gripping the broom handle. She heard a shout as she wobbled forward. Looking back, she saw a Slytherin falling off their broom. And they were falling quickly.

She quickly turned her broom around and sped toward the falling boy. Tilting her broom down and gripping tightly on the handle, Deirdre held out her hand and grabbed he boy, pulling him up on to her broom. She pulled up just before they could hit the ground.

"Are you alright?" she asked looking over her shoulder. The boy nodded, too shocked from the fall to speak. "You'll be fine. Just hold on, I'll put us on the ground." As she spoke, she lowered them until they could safely get off the broom.

Professor Renoir sat atop her broom in the middle of the Pitch and watched as her students followed her example and made the lap around. Most of them seemed to be doing a pretty fair job of it, though it was slow going at first. She would be talking to Adelaine Beaumont about the Quidditch team for certain; first years would be allowed to try out next year.

You’re all doing well, keep it up!” she shouted in enouragement.

She was just about to signal for everyone to line up when it happened. A Slytherin boy, Jon Fyrth, was jerking around too much on his broom and was soon tipping over and falling to the ground. Just as Marguerite went to turn and speed down toward him, a Hufflepuff girl beat her to it. Another natural talent.

Fyrth, get back on your broom but stay only five feet up the rest of the class,” she directed as she landed smoothly on the ground beside them. “McCalahan, you’re a life saver, aren’t you? 25 points to Hufflepuff.

Miriam only dared to turn her head as she brought her broom to a stop over the field. Jon Fyrth had been saved from a nasty fall by her housemate and it made her smile.

She almost lost her balance as she stopped paying attention but quickly righted herself. "I don't need to be the next accident," she told herself as she resumed going around the field with her class. She went slowly, but steadily around the field. Wary of her balance, but glad she wasn't causing any trouble.

It was easy to see who had been on a broom before, and though Miriam wouldn't call herself a natural, she was glad she was managing to stay right side up.

Mitri watched with wide eyes as Deirdre saved the Slytherin boy, maybe Deidre would have been better off in Gryffindor alongside Mitri. She watched as Miriam righted herself after being focused on the daring rescue. Seemed Mitri wasn't the only clumsy one.

Flying next to Miriam, Mitri said, "Isn't this amazing? I never thought flying could be so uplifting, pun intended. I cannot wait till we're allowed to try out for Quidditch. I think I have the build of a future chaser, but then again I'd sooner fall off my own broom than be able to catch a Quaffle, dodge a Bludger, and fly all at once." Mitri said in a rush, keeping stride with Miriam.

"Sorry I tend to talk a lot, and all at once! Some people find it annoying, others charming, even others amusing, and.... I'm doing it again aren't I?" Mitri asked sheepishly.
