PostSubject: An Unlikely Friendship   An Unlikely Friendship Icon_minitime11/5/2014, 00:48

Emmanuelle Armand stared out the large bay window of the bridge walkway, watching the sea. It was a beautiful day in Scarborough; the sun hit the water and made it the perfect shade of bright teal. That’s what Emmy loved the most about this new home of hers – the different colors of the sea. It changed with the weather. Yesterday, it was as gray as the storm clouds that hovered above it.

M’lady, your mother has set up breakfast out on the shore,” a mousy serving girl muttered, bowing her head.

Merci,” Em responded, walking briskly to the other side of the bridge.

Passing through the open entrance hall, Emmy noticed a group of men from the town, unloading from a cart. She figured they must be delivering the new benches her stepfather had ordered a few weeks ago. None of this mattered to her, of course, so she walked on – until she saw someone familiar.

Petyr?” she asked, raising an eyebrow and pulling the boy aside. “You deed not tell me zat you lived ‘ere.

Petyr was unloading benches for the Great Hall, trying his best to keep up with the other men. The carpenter's son, Sadon, was helping him. while Petyr has been an assistant for a year or two, he was still pretty scrawny compared to Sadon. They were around the same age, but Sadon had more meat on his bones.

Petyr jumped when he heard Emmy talking to him. He remembered that she stood up for him when he was trying to buy an owl. She was nice, but very script, if he remembered correctly. She used a spell on the shopkeeper.

"Umm....hi Emmy. Yes, My Lady, I live here," he said with a friendly smile.

"I thought you lived in France, My Lady," he asked timidly. He didn't want to offend the girl.

"Petyr, we're going on a break for breakfast. Don't wonder to far, okay?" the carpenter told him, handing him a small bag of food. It was only a slice of cheese, a slice of bread, and an apple.

"Yes sir," Petyr said back. The carpenter nodded to Emmy and went back to his cart. Peytr blushed. He didn't say 'My Lady' or anything. Could he get in trouble? Petyr didn't know what to do and he was trying to be extra polite. She was a noble, living here, and he was under her rule, so wouldn't he have to say 'My Lady'? Or, did it not apply to him since he wasn't a servant? He was very confused.

"So, beautiful weather isn't it?" he asked with a smile, breathing in the sea air.

((OOC: As a peasant, you’d say “m’lady”. You can always tell a noble from a commoner in the way they say m’lady or my lady.))

Emmanuelle stared after the carpenter, eyes narrowed. Did he really just nod to her? A nod? Oh, her stepfather would be hearing about this, most certainly. How dare he treat me like some commoner, Em bristled. Like one of these paysan vil women!

Your leader eez very, uhm..” She silently cursed herself for not knowing the word. Treacherous? No. Disobedient? Perhaps.. “Ugh, nevermind.

With a sigh, Emmy gestured for Petyr to follow her out to the shoreline. Maybe if no one realized he was a peasant, she could sit and talk with him for a few minutes. After all, she knew absolutely no one in England other than her wretched cousin Adelaine.

You may seet ‘ere,” she offered, pointing to a bench. “’ow are you liking zees Scarborough place? Eez eet, um, very friendly?

She huffed, realizing she probably didn’t make much sense. Instead of worrying about it, though, she gazed at the sea and the rocky shore, studying the cliffs that lined it. Suddenly, she saw a small fox dart in between the few trees there were.

Un renard,” she exclaimed, standing up. “We should follow, yes?

Without awaiting an answer, she hurried off after the fox.

"Umm, yes, m'lady. I like Scarborough very much. The beach is nice," he replied. He took out his apple and bit into it, enjoying the bitter taste. He preferred green apples to red apples.

"Ummm," Petyr said, looking at the carpenter's. He then shurgged and followed Emmy.

"So, m'lady, how long have you been in Scarborough?" Petyr asked, as they followed the baby fox. Petyr wasn't a big adventure type. But, following the fox couldn't be that bad.

"Are you attending Hogwarts next year?" he asked, watching the fox dash through a log. Petyr watched it dash into a bush. He reached into his breakfast bag and ripped off a little piece of bread. He made cat noises to the fox and offered it bread. The fox crawled out on it's stomach and sniffed the bread. It cautiously took it from Petyr's hand and then ran off.

"Whoops. I'm sorry, m'lady. I must have scared it off," he apologized.

"You shouldn't feed foxes, lad," a unfamiliar voice said. Petyr jerked up and looked around. Two men stood about five feet away. One had a knife.

"Now, step away from the girl and no one will get hurt," one of them said. Petyr took a step closer to Emmy. He had to stand his ground.

Oh mon Dieu,” Emmy muttered as they were cornered.

Em hadn’t even noticed that they were at the edge of the forest, only a few feet from stepping off the end of the world and landing in the rocky sea. Taking a deep breath, she stood firm and sized up their opponents. Both men looked like they’d been raised in a barn (they probably had), with rotting teeth and tangled hair.

Yer the little lady, aye?” the tallest sneered, rubbing his nose on his sleeve.

Cochon, Em thought with a grimace. “Oui,” she answered confidently. “And this eez my cousin, son of Lord Beaumont.

She hoped Petyr would sense the tone and go along with it. If the bandits thought they were both highborn, they’d ransom them both. Before she could say another word, a third man, fat and grubby, grabbed her from behind and held a knife against her throat.

Dis one’s a li’l lord too, eh?” the short hooded man asked. “Don’ believe it fer a second, his clothes is no better’n mine!

Petyr picked up on what Emmy was saying. Fake it, his mind encouraged.

"Of course, I'm a lord. I just don't dress that way," he agreed.

"I don't believe it for a second," the fat man said. The tallest one walked up to him. Petyr stifled the urge to run. The man took a ball of Petyr's shirt in his hands and lifted Petyr half an inch off the ground.

"Lying's a sin boy. You know that, don't ya?" the tallest man threatened.

"Yes sir. But, I ain't lying. Now, put me down before my father has your head," Petyr said back, a wave of courage washing over him from God knows where. He was trying to sound like a young lord. The tallest man smirked.

"Sure. I'll put you down," the man said, still having Petyr by his shirt. He walked to the edge of the cliff. He dangled Petyr over the side.

"Don't do anything dumb," the fattest man warned the tallest one.

"Oh. I won't. He's just going for a swim," the man said. Petyr looked at him in shock as the man released him.....over the edge of the cliff.

Emmy screamed at the top of her lungs, which only earned her a slap in the face and a tighter grip from her captor.

’ow could you do zat, what ‘as he done to you?!” she squealed.

Shut it an’ just come with us, or you’ll get the same,” the tall man, who was clearly the leader, warned her.

The only thing that made her a little calmer was the curious fact that she never heard a splash. Of course, that could always mean Petyr landed on a boulder… But she held out hope. There were plenty of magic folk around the York area; Euron Armand’s liege lord, Brynden Fendrel, kept an entirely magical household, and so did they. Perhaps someone had saved Petyr.

Here, Tubby,” the leader said, tossing a rope to Em’s captor. “Tie her up and gag her.

Do not put zat filthy rag een my mouth,” she shouted stubbornly, tearing up.

Tubby didn’t listen, and stuffed the cloth in her mouth anyway, tying it around her head. While he did that, the short hooded one looped the rope around her so tightly she feared she might faint.

Petyr was falling and falling fast. He saw his life flash before his eyes. He was tensing up to hit to the water. Then, he was floating.

"Good catch Finn," a voice said as Petyr was slowly lowered to the ground. He looked up at his rescuers. It was two wizards. Young wizards. They didn't look much older than Peytr. One was a peasant and one was a noble.

"You need to stay away from cliffs," the peasant (he assumed was Finn) joked, helping him up.

"Yeah. Be careful next time. That could have been bad," the noble warned. Petyr smiled.

"Thank you. But, I didn't fall," Petyr said, remembering Emmy.

"What do you mean?" Finn asked.

"I was thrown off. By a really tall man. There was a gang of them and now they're carrying my friend! We have to save her!" Petyr explained quickly.

"Take us where you were thrown off," the noble said. Petyr took off up the cliff, the two boys following behind him. They got there about a minute later.

"They might be deeper in the woods," Petyr said. The two boys went into the woods.

"Hey! Let her go!" the noble said, seeing them. He drew his wand and pointed it at the group. Finn and Petyr followed suit.

"Be careful Symon," Finn warned. Symon nodded. Petyr was really worried.

Tubby was fast for such a large man. As soon as they heard the footsteps, the group took off, Tubs carrying Em; well, it was more like dragging. She screamed the entire time. Finally, the footsteps caught up with them and a rather handsome young noble pulled out a wand. Emmy honestly could have cried she was so happy to see another wizard.

You think wavin’ a stick at us is gonna scare us?” the leader chuckled.

Run along, lad,” the short one said. Pretty soon, all three men were laughing heartily.

I said let her go,” the boy said through gritted teeth.

Tubby had another idea. He brandished his knife and held it up against Emmy’s neck again with a smirk. Quicker than a breath of air, the noble’s friend (with Petyr behind him, much to the bandits’ surprise!) whipped out his wand and disarmed Tubby, the knife flying into a tree.

What the bloody hell,” the leader started to shout, pulling out a rusty sword. The noble was quicker, though.

Ice in Colubrum!” he incanted quickly.

It was a spell Em had never seen before. A huge serpent made entirely of ice appeared. The bandits screamed like little girls, terrified. The ice serpent reared back and then swiftly darted forward, slamming into the short man. Tubby let go of Em in surprise, and the noble pulled her to safety. The bandits ran for their lives, the serpent following.

How long with that thing go, mate?” the noble’s friend asked, grinning.

It’ll chase them for a few yards then evaporate,” he smirked, then looked down at Em. He carefully removed the gag and untied the rope. “Are you Lady Emmanuelle?

Oui, monsieur,” she smiled up at him like he was a god. “Merci, a thousand times, I cannot thank you enough for saving me.

"Are you alright?" Petyr asked Emmy. He was glad that Symon had taken care of the thugs.

"So, what are you two doing together, a noble and a peasant?" Finn asked.

"Well, Finn, you're the one to talk," Symon said back. The two boys laughed and shook their head. They were obviously friends.

"Do you think they'll come back?" Petyr asked.

"If they know what's good for them, they won't. Come on. Let's head back to the castle," Symon recommended. They began to walk back to the castle.

"So, do you two go to Hogwarts?" Petyr asked.

"Of course. I'm a Hufflepuff," Finn said.

"I'm a Slytherin," Symon said, helping Emmy down from a log.

As they walked back to Rockfort Castle (now Em knew why it was called the rock fort), the lads chatted while Emmy kept tripping every time she glanced at Symon. Who was this mysterious hero of hers?

Pardon my interruption,” she said, tapping Symon on the shoulder. “Where eez it zat you are from?

I’m Lord Symon of York,” the noble said with a short bow. “And this is Finnius Ruddock.

Pleased to meet you, m’lady,” Finn smiled, bowing.

York?” she gasped, delighted that he was so high-up; York was basically a step below royalty. “What are you doing ‘ere in Scarborough?

I was sent as a representative to Bridlington,” Symon explained, slowing his pace a bit. “I thought I’d see Scarborough while I was so close.

Finn laughed quietly, and Symon shot a glare his way. He punched him lightly in the arm and Finnius shut up. What Em didn’t know was that Symon was betrothed to her wretched cousin Adelaine, and he knew Adele spent part of her summer here in Scarborough each year. He had hoped to run into her, but alas, she was not to be here until next month.

I insist zat you join us for supper,” she said, a smile plastered to her face. “We cannot leave ze young Lord Fendrel out een ze cold tonight.

Gladly,” Symon accepted, a bit wary. “As long as my friends Finnius and Petyr are welcome.

Em frowned slightly, looking at the peasants. This Lord Fendrel was abnormally accepting of all ranks, it seemed. With a sigh, she nodded and agreed. Though, inside, she was thinking ’We may as well invite the dockworkers and butchers and forest-dwellers, too.’

Petyr was so excited to eat a decent meal for the night if him and Finn were invited to the castle. He was so excited that he barely realized that he was extremely late for work. That was, until his boss caught him.

"Slacking off again, Petyr?!" his boss yelled when they approached the castle. The group stopped when they heard that. Petyr yelped when his boss grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him back to the workman. Symon wanted to say something but Finn held him back. There wasn't much he could do.

"Do I need to tell Goodlady Bonel that you've been slacking? You know she'll have your hide if she finds out. Now, get back to work. If you work hard, maybe you'll get lunch," his boss said, very annoyed. Petyr scrambled to the nearest bench and began to move it to the Great Hall.

"Great job," Sadon said sarcastically as they moved benches. Petyr sighed. Never any fun for peasants.

How can he treat people that way?” Symon sighed angrily, staring after the carpenters.

It’s the way the world works, mate,” Finn said admittedly. “Nothin’ to be done about it.

I disagree, monsieur,” Em chimed in.

She walked determinedly over to the boss and tapped on his arm. The big man turned and looked down at her with a rather stupid and snide expression, folding his arms. Em took a deep breath; she had to keep her cool. She was a lady.

I beg your pardon, but you ‘ave been inexplicably rude today,” she began confidently. “Not only to zees boy, but to myself.

Wha’ of it, missy?” he grumbled.

Well, it eez a grave disrespect to treat your lieges zees way,” she went on, still calm. He stepped closer and got in her face.

Whacha gonna do about it?” He spit on the ground at her feet. That was the last straw. She could no longer keep her cool.

Listen, peasant!” she shouted, pushing him as hard as she could. “You will treat me with respect! You do not nod to nobles and walk away, you imbecile, especially two nobles. We are not your lackeys, you say m’lady and m’lord. And zees Petyr ‘as done no wrong, you do not abuse your workers, especially when zey are taken aside by your rulers!!

It was quite a rant, but she just couldn’t keep it in. The boss raised his arm and before she could move away, he slapped her hard in the face; so hard, in fact, that she fell to the floor. Two guards tackled him to the ground and quickly clapped him in irons, while a third ran to Emmanuelle and helped her up.

Petyr and Sadon put their bench down and was walking outside when Emmy exploded on his boss. Then, he was arrested for slapping her. Petyr stood there, his jaw on the ground. He couldn't believe what he saw.

"The peasants will rise up one day! We'll never have to work for these pricks again!" his boss yelled crazily as the guards pulled his away. The other workers looked at each other, unsure of what to do.

"Take an early lunch. We'll know more later," Sadon told them. They smiled happily and went on their merry way.

"Petyr, you're a hard worker and a good friend. But, after this, you probably don't have a job. I'll talk to father when he's more sane but I would suggest looking for more work," Sadon informed him, becoming stressed. Petyr sighed. Goodwoman Bonel will kill me, he thought with dread.

"I understand. Thank you," he said. Sadon nodded at him and went to follow the guards who detained his father.

"Wow. That was incredible," Finn told Emmy. Petyr smiled.

"Yes. Thank you, m'lady," Petyr said gratefully.

"We should go talk to Lord Armand. To ask what he will do and to give our testimony," Symon suggested.

Emmy rubbed her cheek and sighed, exasperated. This was the second time in one day that she had been slapped. Mon Dieu, she thought grumpily. These Englishmen will be the death of me.

Well, this has been a rather interesting day,” Finnius grinned.

Interesting for you, per’aps,” she grimaced. “Traumatizing for me.

Right,” he frowned quickly. “Sorry, m’lady.

Symon pulled a chair over and gestured for her to sit. How noble of him, she thought, looking at him dreamily. A conversation a few feet away soon caught her attention, however.

Petyr, why do you not work for ze Armand ‘ouse?” she suggested, shrugging. “We could use ‘elp een ze kitchens.

Without waiting for his response, she snapped her fingers at a passing servant and spouted something in French. The woman nodded and walked swiftly down to the kitchens to get the head cook. Symon smiled at her, then turned to mutter something to Finn. What could they be talking about?

Petyr thought about working for Lord Armand. It probably paid more money than working for the carpenter, right? But, would he become just a worker or an indentured servant? He really wanted to keep his freedom and he didn't want to get into a contract to work for Lord Armand until he's old and wrinkly and unusable. But, a job was a job, no matter the cost. But, was it worth it?

"I don't think she's here mate. You know you're father may want us back soon," Finn whispered to Symon in a hushed tone. Petyr could hear them but Emmy probably couldn't

"We could wait a few days, just to see if she does come," Symon countered.

"Symon," Finn said warningly.

"Finn," Symon whispered back.

"My Lady, did you call for me?" the head chef called out, coming up to her. Petyr blushed and wished he was an ant. A tiny ant no one cared about. But, the head chef, who was a bit of a older lady, saw him.

"Awww. Aren't you a cutie?" she said, grabbing his cheek and shaking his head back and forth. Symon and Finn laughed and Petyr blushed more. Now, he really wished he was an ant.

"Thank you," Petyr said as she released his cheek, his face a deep tomato red.

You may choose to leave at any time, Petyr,” Em told the boy, probably reading his mind. “You ‘ave my word.

Emmy raised an eyebrow as she listened in on Finn and Symon’s conversation. Who were they talking about? Who were they expecting to come to Scarborough?

Pardon, monsieurs,” she said politely. “Um, who eez it zat you are wanting to see ‘ere?

No one, m’lady,” Finn said quickly.

Actually,” Symon started, ignoring Finn’s glare. “I was hoping to see your cousin.

Em blinked and stared blankly at him. Her cousin.

You know,” he continued nervously. “Erm, Lady Adelaine? We’re betrothed, you see.

She blinked again. Adelaine. Her cousin. And Symon. Betrothed. To the Ravenclaw. The shame of House Beaumont. Her filthy blood traitor cousin Adelaine.

M’lady, might I take the young man down to the kitchens to show him around?” Madame Greta asked anxiously, noticing the look of numb rage on her lady’s face. Emmanuelle didn’t respond. All she could think about was that minx, Adelaine.

Petyr looked at Emmy, comforted that he could keep his freedom if he worked her. Then, a servant came up to Emmy.

"Miss, a Goodwoman Bonel is looking for Petyr," she said. I'm in trouble, he thought as she came into to the Great Hall. Symon and Finn stopped her and talked to her for a second.

"Petyr Martell, you know better than to be getting in trouble," she scolded. Goodwoman Bonel took pity on Petyr after his parents died in a house hire that Petyr barely survived. She took him in, but she was very strict. She had her loving moments (mostly in public), but they were very rare. Today, she was in a good mood.

"Now, these nice young men have told me that you have been offered a position in the kitchens. I would like you to take it since the carpenter has been jailed. Just be more careful, alright?" she said, fixing his shirt. Petyr looked back to Finn and Symon and they shot him a thumbs up. Petyr smiled and nodded.

Emmy could not believe it. She was frozen in shock. Adelaine wasn’t even here and she was still managing to annoy the sanity out of her! Once she regained her composure, Em realized Symon was still staring at her, awaiting an answer.

Lady Adelaine eez not ‘ere,” she said calmly, clearing her throat. “She ‘as already made ‘er summer visit ‘ere. Actually, she left only ze last week.

Oh,” was all Symon replied, disappointed.

M’lady,” Greta peeped, pointing at Petyr.

Ah, oui,” Emmy nodded, turning to the boy. “Petyr, this eez Madame Greta, head cook. You will be looking to ‘er for des conseils…um, guidance.

Very nice to meet you, Petyr,” the kindly old cook said, shaking his hand. “First rule: refer to everyone as Madame or Monsieur. Most of this household was brought over from France, and they’ll think it disrespectful of ye to call ‘em anything else. I’m from London, myself.

Madame, you may take ‘im to ze kitchens, and ‘is room,” Em instructed. “As for you, Lord Fendrel, and er, Monsieur Feen –

Finn, m’lady,” Finnius corrected politely.

But zat eez what I said,” she responded blankly. “Feen. Anyway, you may stay for supper, but I will not be joining you. I believe I will be retiring to mon chambres now. Bonsoir.

Emmy curtsied and turned on her heel, off to her room to shake off the shocking news of her cousin’s betrothal to the highest family in England under the King.
